COP21 was the most important event of 2015

2015 was a very eventful year for me. Many personal life turnarounds occurred this year. After a life dedicated to spiritual bachelorhood and social work I got married and before the year came to a close my wife and I were graced with a daughter.

This was also a year of nonsensical political turmoil and economic down casting for Malaysians in general as feudal political lords of the country tried to topple one another with scandals and farce as the economy slid to lows not seen since the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997.

It's sad that I have watch reruns of Jon Stewart's Daily Show on Youtube, but on the bright side I think he has been aptly replaced by Stephen Colbert on the Late Show and Donald Trump horsing around with his mouth instead of his hair.

2015 was also a year that small time thugs accidentally became infamous thanks to international media addicted to fear mongering and war–behold the rise of ISIS, Boko Haram and their ilk. Instead of stymieing the gun and ammunition market to stop their rise the world forms a coalition with bigger guns and bombs to exterminate a disgruntled group of people who will simply fade away if they didn't have access to AK47s, RPGs and Toyota pickups.

2015 was also the year 1.7 million hectars of rainforest burnt in Southeast Asia dumping as much greenhouse gases into the atmosphere as Germany does in a year. It was a nuisance to be walking around with a surgical mask simply to go out to buy groceries. The Pacific mothered more super typhoons and hurricanes than ever following the trend of the strongest El Nino on record and summer temperature soared to historic highs in the northern hemisphere.

Of all the history made in 2015 I consider the United Nations Climate Conference in Paris as the most significant event that would determine the kind of future we are going to have. Living in the tropics where we are exposed to balmy temperatures day in and day out I can tell you that the 0.88 degrees Celsius rise in average global temperature is already too hot. It would be nice if the world came together to stem the rise at 1 degree Celsius, but we have to accept the 2 degrees Celsius figure since scientist say even that is very optimistic. So by the time my daughter is in her golden years the world is going to be a much hotter place. We really need to reverse global warming and I hope that 2016 will bring on the Green Energy Revolution.
